Information

Try to keep up, ninnywits. This is a lesson on how the moral climate in this academy has plunged drastically! You'd call it freedom, but it's a perverse anarchy! The only way to return this pathetic school to the standards of which its fully capable is simple. We rule it!

—Kneesocks to the Anarchy Sisters

"Les Diaboliques" (悪魔のような女たち, Akuma No Yō Na Onnatachi) is the eleventh episode of season one and the eleventh overall episode of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. It first aired on November 5, 2010.

Synopsis[]

Panty and Stocking arrive at Daten City High School to find that a strict academic regime has been established by the mayor's daughters, Scanty and Kneesocks.

Plot[]

The episode starts with a few exploding ghosts, who, upon being killed, leave no Heaven Coin behind. Panty and Stocking complain in the bathroom, but after finding a non-replica looking ghost, they try killing it. The small ghost manages to escape, and flees through a toilet, splashing the angels with toilet water and saying that the ghost is a girl when Panty and Stocking thought that the ghost was a boy.

Enraged, the Anarchy sisters attack the ghost once again, but the conflict lasted all night apparently, as it was morning when they decided to let it go and returned back to school. Shortly after, a student asks them why they weren’t wearing their uniforms. He then proceeds to explain that the new queens of Daten City High School established a few rules they needed to follow.

Panty calls Brief, and asks him to explain what is going on. Brief tells them the new queens, who are actually demons and the mayor's daughters, bound the school with new rules and morals. The demon sisters arrive, and upon noticing Panty and Stocking, they comment on their stench. The Anarchy sisters tell them rules are boring and pointless, but Kneesocks goes off the handle and explains how rules are needed in order to solve the chaos of freedom.

While in the cafeteria, Panty and Stocking complain about the newly established healthy and tasteless menu. Scanty and Kneesocks sit beside the angels' table and proceed to criticize them and their way of handling ghosts. Now completely enraged, the angels challenge the demon sisters, in order to prove who is better, but the demon sisters win in every category.

The angels are sent to the losers' class, where they find the little ghost from the night before. The ghost tells them he knows where the demon sisters' hideout is, and that in order to go, they need to get inside a toilet.

It turns out the demons' hideout is in fact a ghost factory, which is the one producing the heavens-worthless ghosts the Anarchy sisters had been encountering. Garterbelt tells them to destroy the place, for a Ghoststone in there had been absorbing human evil for thousands of years. Scanty and Kneesocks find the Anarchy sisters, and both parties transform their respective clothes into weapons.

Upon finding out Scanty and Kneesocks are actually demons, the ghost decides to join them instead, but is sliced by Kneesocks' scythe, which turned her into a bigger ghost. However, the ghost is killed easily anyway. Both parties prepare to battle, but Brief tells them that if they really want to win, all they need to do is get the Ghoststone, which Chuck eats.

Fastener kicks Chuck repeatedly in order for him to spit the stone, which Brief proceeds to catch. Panty shoots the newly created ghosts and orders Brief to run, who decides to flee through a toilet. Scanty and Panty go off on a duel, just as Stocking and Kneesocks do the same.

Kneesocks calls for Fastener, who appears driving G-String and attempts to run over the two. Stocking does the same in order for it to be fair, and Chuck appears driving See Through, hitting G-String as the two powerful vehicles drive to another floor of the building at their maximum speed. Scanty and Panty keep fighting, while Stocking and Kneesocks duel with their respective cars, which at some point, collide from the front.

Panty forces Scanty's face on a toilet, and upon freeing herself, Scanty does the same to Panty, but on an urinal. Stocking pokes Brief with her sword, enabling him to kick See Through's suspension upwards as the latter manages to tear G-String's roof, while Brief runs to the school rooftop. He is soon found by Kneesocks, but Stocking pushes him aside. Scanty points at Brief with her revolver and shoots at him, but Panty shoots at the same time, sending Scanty's bullet away.

The demon sisters pin Brief down, and threaten to kill him, but the angels tell them they don't care for him, rendering the demons' threat useless. The Demon sisters themselves, however, are greatly shocked to hear this sort of thing from angels as they are supposed to be emissaries of God yet they care nothing for saving the life of an innocent human.

Panty tells them rules are meant to be broken, and both Scanty and Panty shoot each other. Panty's bullets seem to deflate Scanty's, and Stocking then proceeds to send the bullets the demons' way with her katana. Brief throws the stone at the angels, which Panty destroys, making both, the factory and the school burn to a crisp. The demons tell them they'll call it a draw and flee.

Panty asks Brief if he wants to have sex with her, but Brief tells her he wants to take things slow. Panty then ditches him and she and Stocking leave. In the end, Scanty and Kneesocks report back to the mayor, who punishes them for their failure.

Trivia[]

  • During the rooftop scene when Scanty and Kneesocks' threaten Brief's life, Panty dismisses their threat and goads them on, shocking the demon sisters with her callous disregard for human life. In "Bitch Girls 4 Life" it is revealed that demonic weapons cannot harm humans, so if Panty was aware of this then she merely called their bluff.
  • Similar to the single dot and dual dot selector switch on a Glock 18, Scanty's pistols have similar switches, with the single Demon Wing on the selector representing Semi-auto, and the Dual Demon Wings representing fully automatic.
  • This is the first half-hour long episode of the series, and the only half-hour episode of season one.
  • The fourth wall was broken four times:
    • In the English dub, Panty mispronounces "Les" as "Lez". Stocking corrects her, and Panty then says it the right way.
    • In the English sub, Stocking says she gave up fat "episodes ago" while in the dub, she says she gave up fat 10 Ghosts ago.
    • Right before Panty and Stocking compare their popularity with Scanty and Kneesocks, a "V.S" sign appears onscreen. Kneesocks then smacks it away.
    • After Stocking deflected Scanty's bullets, one of the bullets bounced off of the top of the screen.
  • For a brief second when Panty gives Scanty a swirly and she screams in disgust, you could see a tiny Scanty in her mouth when she screams.
  • At an event held by the Gainax staff on December 28, 2010, this episode was voted as the best episode of the series.[1]
  • This is the last episode of the first season that features Daten City High School.
  • This is the highest-rated episode of the series on IMDb.[2]
  • In the English dub, after Scanty and Kneesocks transform their lingerie, Panty says "Well, fuck me in the keyhole." Coincidentally (or not), this line foreshadows the events of "Bitch Girls", in which Panty has sex with Brief after it is revealed that Brief's penis can be used as a key to open Hell's Gate.
  • The Loser Ghost gets two lines of dialogue in the English dub when Panty and Stocking attempt to kill her at the beginning.
  • Scanty lightly swears in the English dub by calling Panty a "rancorous whore".
  • In the English dub, this is the first and only episode where Panty reads the episode's title card without Stocking since both of the Anarchy sisters narrate title cards in almost each episode.
  • Fifteen years after the first season, the episode "The Brothers from Heaven" showcases similarities with "Les Diaboliques" as it also beats the latter in ratings.
    • The episode's similarities with "Les Diaboliques" consists of both episodes are the sixth full-length episodes of their respective seasons, and that a pair of antagonistic siblings are introduced and outshine Panty and Stocking before being defeated by them and that also included a car chase scene.

Cultural references[]

  • The episode's title is a reference to the 1955 French suspense film Les Diaboliques.
  • The title card is a reference to a promotional poster for the 1996 thriller film Diabolique, which is a remake of Les Diaboliques.
  • When Scanty gets the photos of Panty and Stocking falling down the trapdoor, she receives them from the mouth of a marble bust. This is a reference to the 1979 film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, which has a similar set up.
  • After being sent to the loser's class, there was a poster with Panty's photo and a headline saying "Good Save the Queen", which is a reference to the Sex Pistols' single, "God Save the Queen".
  • Another headline read "The Punk and the Godfather", which is a reference to The Who's 1973 song of the same name.
  • There are several action figures referencing American superhero comics, such as the Hulk and Batman, on one of the desks in the loser's class.
  • One of the people in the loser's class references the Star Wars franchise by wearing a Darth Vader helmet, with cape, and wielding a lightsaber.
  • Boota, a character from Gurren Lagann, can be seen in a small handful of frames when the characters go underground through a toilet.
  • It is possible that this episode is a subtle reference to the season 1 episode of The Powerpuff Girls, titled "The Rowdyruff Boys", in which the Powerpuff Girls meet their evil counterparts, the Rowdyruff Boys. Both episodes were the first double-length episodes for their respective series.
  • The ghosts made in the factory have a shield with the Batman symbol. Furthermore, in the English dub, they are referred to as Dark Knight Ghosts, a reference to Batman's nickname.
  • Another reference to Batman is the insignia on the hood of G-String, which is a reference to the Batmobile.
  • The duel between the two powerful vehicles, See Through and G-String is a possible reference to the movie "Basic Instinct", where a Ford Mustang GT is chasing and dueling against a 1991 Lotus Esprit Turbo SE.
  • In the English dub, while running with the Ghoststone, Brief asks himself "What would Indiana Jones do?", a possible reference to the 1981 movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • While arguing with the Daemon sisters outside the school, Panty says "We have the right to party!", referencing the Beastie Boys' 1986 song, "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)".
  • In the English dub, after arriving beneath the school, Stocking says "Curiouser and curiouser...", a reference to the 1951 film, Alice in Wonderland, which, in turn, is adapted from the 1865 novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
  • In the English dub, after Loser Ghost transforms into a bigger Ghost, Brief namedrops Helena Bonham Carter.
  • As Scanty and Kneesocks berate Panty and Stocking with their smart language and popularity, Panty and Stocking briefly appear to look like Muppets.

Continuity[]

  • In the Japanese dub, after Loser Ghost jumps into the toilet, Panty says: "That's one place we don't wanna go." Stocking replies: "Speaking from experience, are you?", referencing when Panty got sucked into a toilet in "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity".
  • After Kneesocks made fun of Stocking for her weight, she snapped back by saying "I gave up fat like ten Ghosts ago!", referring to "The Diet Syndrome". As she says this, several clips of said episode are briefly seen.

Errors[]

  • After Scanty and Kneesocks finished their transformation and while saying their names, Scanty's armband is suddenly gone. It appears again in the next scene.
  • When Scanty shot a barrage of bullets at the angels, Stocking countered it with her katanas, slicing some of Panty's hair in the process. Later in the episode, however, Panty's hair is no longer cut.
  • The number of bullets fired in Scanty's last attack fluctuates between shots. Initially, four bullets survive the contact with Panty's shots, but around ten bullets are seen zeroing in on the Anarchy sisters before Stocking deflects them. In the subsequent shot of the bullets ricocheting toward the demon sisters, there's only four once again.
