Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (パンティ&ストッキングwithガーターベルト , Pantii ando sutokkingu wizu gātāberuto) is the first season of the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt series, which premiered on October 1, 2010 with the episodes "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity" and "Death Race 2010" and ended on December 24, 2010 with the episodes "Bitch Girls" and "Bitch Girls: 2 Bitch". It was produced by Gainax and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi.[1]
The season, which consists of thirteen episodes, revolves around the titular characters, Panty and Stocking, who live in a church with Garterbelt and kill ghosts as per his command. The first season aired on BS Nittele, and was simulcast on Nico Nico Douga and Crunchyroll.
The English dub for the first season was produced by Funimation and released throughout the summer of 2012. It was also released on DVD and Blu-ray.
Development[]
Following the broadcast of Imaishi's previous series, Gurren Lagann, the show's staff took several trips to relax. During those trips, the staff often got drunk and created ideas for a new series. Many concepts for the anime were conceived during the initial trip, including the names of the main characters, "Panty" and "Stocking", which were initially joke names.
At first, the series was set to be a baseball-themed anime, led by Masahiko Otsaku and Atsushi Nishigori. However, Yoh Yoshinari, Shigeto Koyama, and Hiromi Wakabayashi had different plans; they wanted the series to be based around angels and demons and have a cartoony artstyle. They also wanted to write the series so that it could be continued forever, unlike Gurren Lagann, which had a proper conclusion.[2] Wakabayashi cited the shows Drawn Together, The Powerpuff Girls, Glee, and Gossip Girl as inspiration for the series' crudeness.[3]
On May 3, 2010, the series was first announced on the June issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine.[4] Several comics and visuals were released prior to the series' premiere to preview the series.[5] The series' first trailer was released on September 1, 2010 by Kadokawa Entertainment.
In August 2010, Gainax opened a blog about the production of Panty & Stocking, titled "Daten City Journal". The blog site provided information about new events, episodes, and merchandise regarding the series. The blog's last known post was in 2018, and it was shut down sometime afterward.
English dub[]
On April 14, 2011, Funimation announced that they had acquired the rights to the series and planned to release the series on DVD the following year.[6] On April 28, 2012, Funimation announced the main cast of the series' English dub.[7] The first two episodes of the English dub were released on streaming on May 22 for those that were subscribed to Funimation's Elite Video Subscription service.[8] The entire English dub was released via DVD on July 10.[1] The Blu-ray was released on January 15, 2013.[9]
The English dub was directed by Colleen Clinkenbeard, who also played the English voice of Scanty, and primarily written by Jamie Marchi, who also played the English voice of Panty. Jamie stated that the dub is so vulgar because the Japanese directors wanted to learn more Western swearing.[10] Upon its release, the English dub of the series was praised for its vulgar and dark humor, which matches the manic and ridiculous energy of the series. It has even been called one of the greatest anime dubs of all time.

Trivia[]
- Four episodes' titles were changed in the English dub:
- "Excretion Without Honor Nor Humanity" was renamed to "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity".
- "The Clamor of the Beehive" was renamed to "The Turmoil of the Beehive".
- "The Runny" was renamed to "Raiders of the Nasal Dark".
- "Transwhoremers" was renamed to "Trans-homers".
- While most episodes of the series contain two segments, the sixth episode contains one segment and the tenth episode contains five segments.
- The runtime of the first ten episodes is 23 minutes and 42 seconds. However, from the eleventh episode onward, the runtime is extended to 25 minutes.
- Due to poor ratings in Japan and Gainax's ownership of the series, the second season was never released and was presumably scrapped. However, after Trigger finally got the rights to the series in 2023, they announced that the long-awaited second season (titled New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT) would be released in 2025.
- While Crunchyroll lists the three "Chuck to the Future" episodes as one whole segment altogether, several storyboards and home media reveal that they are indeed three separate episodes.
- In "D.C. Confidential", it is implied that this season (or at least every episode in this season up to that point) takes place in 2010, the same year that the series premiered.
- In anticipation for the second season, every episode of the first season was rebroadcasted on Tokyo MX and BS Nippon Television every Wednesday from April 9, 2025 to July 3, 2025.[11]
- As revealed in the Neverending Streaming covering the episode "The Brothers from Heaven", they did not have the opportunity to explain in the first season how Panty and Stocking ended up on Earth for their trial, and added on, saying how their parents, Linière and Silk, intended for them both to finish collecting Heavens quickly but underestimated how their daughters slacked off for the most part instead.
