Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (パンティ&ストッキングwithガーターベルト, Panti ando Sutokkingu wizu Gātāberuto) is the first season of the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt series, which premiered on October 1, 2010 with the episodes "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity" and "Death Race 2010" and ended on December 24, 2010 with the episodes "Bitch Girls" and "Bitch Girls: 2 Bitch". It was produced by Gainax and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi.[1]
The season, which consists of 13 episodes, revolves around the titular characters, Panty and Stocking, who live in a church with Garterbelt and kill ghosts as per his command.
The English dub for the first season was produced by Funimation and released throughout the summer of 2012. It was also released on DVD and Blu-ray.
Development[]
Following the broadcast of Gainax's previous series, the show's staff took several trips to relax. During those trips, the staff often got drunk and created ideas for a new show. Most of the show was conceived during the initial trip, including the names "Panty" and "Stocking".[1] Hiromi Wakabayashi, who created the idea of the series, cited the shows Drawn Together, The Powerpuff Girls, Glee, and Gossip Girl as inspiration for the series.[2]
On May 3, 2010, the series was first announced on the June issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine.[3] Several comics and visuals were released prior to the series' premiere to preview the series.[4]
English dub[]
On April 14, 2011, Funimation announced that they had acquired the rights to the series and planned to release the series on DVD the following year.[5] On April 28, 2012, Funimation announced the main cast of the series' English dub.[6] The first two episodes of the English dub were released on streaming on May 22 for those that were subscribed to Funimation's Elite Video Subscription service.[7] The entire English dub was released via DVD on July 10.[1] The Blu-ray was released on January 15, 2013.[8]
The English dub was primarily written by Jamie Marchi, who also played the English voice of Panty. She stated that the dub is so vulgar because the Japanese directors wanted to learn more dirty slang.[9]

Trivia[]
- Three episodes' titles were changed in the English dub:
- "The Clamor of the Beehive" was renamed to "The Turmoil of the Beehive".
- "The Runny" was renamed to "Raiders of the Nasal Dark".
- "Trans-whorers" was renamed to "Trans-homers".
- While most episodes of the series contain 2 segments, episode 6 contains 1 segment and episode 10 contains 5 segments.
- The runtime of the first 10 episodes is 23 minutes and 42 seconds. However, from the 11th episode onward, the runtime is extended to 25 minutes.
- Due to poor ratings in Japan and Gainax's ownership of the series, the second season was never released and was presumably scrapped. However, after Trigger finally got the rights to the series in 2023, they announced that the long-awaited second season (titled New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) would be released in 2025.
- While Crunchyroll lists the 3 "Chuck to the Future" episodes as one whole segment altogether, several storyboards reveal that they are indeed 3 separate episodes.
